Study Skills: You’re Doing it Wrong…

For some reason, the book for my required University 100 class (aka study skills) has a section on preventing pregnancy and STDs. Of course, if you fail to prevent pregnancy, the book recommends using TV as a babysitter to get some study time in.

Is your class a matter of taking online Blackboard quizzes and calling it a day? (I am loving some of the answer choices.)

Unfortunately, no. We have to do all the written exercises in the book, watch cheesy motivational videos from 1990, and then take a cumulative exam. At least I’m spared the discussion on Blackboard or in class.

The affirmation section also really annoyed me. Two the the affirmations we’re supposed to be saying daily are: “I, [insert name], will have a sense of self worth that is independent of my test scores”, “I, [insert name], have a slim and attractive body”, and “I, [insert name], am wealthy”. Guess it’s ok to tie our self esteem to our weight and bank account, just not our grades. Reading them was almost as bad as having to come up with 20 something affirmations for one of the written assignments.

the ever educational tv babysitter. ah, we’re so lucky we can just plop our kids down and not interact with them!

i can’t believe your book actually says that. :P
